26. Oct 2006: New EU Security Regulations for Carry-on Baggage
New security regulations apply effective November 6, 2006, for carry-on baggage
on flights departing EU airports - regardless of the destination. The new regulations
restrict the amount of liquids that you can take through security checkpoints
and maximum size of carry-on baggage.
These are the specific new regulations:
- Liquids or comparable items of similar
consistency such as gels, aerosols, lotions, creams or toothpaste may
only be carried by travelers in small quantities and in small
containers. The maximum size of a container is limited to 100 ml.
- The containers must be placed and transported
in a clear plastic, zip lock bag having a maximum volume of 1 liter.
Only one bag is permitted per passenger. This bag must be removed from
the carry-on baggage and presented to security personnel at the
checkpoint for separate X-raying.
- Medications and special dietary requirement,
including baby formula, are permitted in carry-on baggage if needed on
board. These must be removed from the carry-on baggage and declared to
security personnel at the checkpoint.
- The traveler may take Duty Free items through
the security checkpoint which he/she has purchased on the day of the
flight in a shop after the boarding card checkpoint at an EU airport or
on board an aircraft of an EU airline. These items must be packed in a
clear plastic bag which has been sealed by shop personnel after paying.
The sales slip with date and location of the purchase must be inside the
bag and capable of being checked (read) without having to open the bag.
- Flights to the US and to UK are still subject
to specific regulations.
- The size of carry-on baggage is limited to 56 cm x 45 cm x 25 cm. This regulation
does not become legally binding until May 6, 2007.

Additional security measures on UK and US flights
Additional cabin baggage restrictions and security controls apply for all
Lufthansa flights
from Great Britain to Germany as well as for all flights to and from the United
States.
We regret any inconvenience our passengers might experience due to these measures.
Lufthansa recommends that its passengers reduce their carry-on luggage to a
minimum
and arrive early at the airport.
US: At the instruction of the German and US authorities since August
10, passengers are not
allowed to bring liquids or gels of any size aboard aircraft in their carry-on
luggage. This
includes
- beverages
- shampoo
- suntan lotion
- creams
- parfum
- toothpaste
- hair gel
- other liquids of similar consistency
Passengers are still allowed to have the following items in their carry-on
luggage:
- electronic equipment including mobile phones,
digital cameras, MP3 players and laptops
- baby formula, breast milk or juice (if a baby
or infant travels in their company)
- essential medicine if the name marked on the medicine / prescription matches
the name on the ticket.
These regulations apply to all flights to the USA with immediate effect. The
items listed above must be stored in passengers baggage ahead of travel and checked in.
UK: Following rules apply for all passengers traveling from and via
the UK but not for
passengers flying from Germany to the UK where the well established rules are
still in
effect.
Passengers may now take one piece of cabin baggage with them. This piece must
not
exceed the following dimensions: 45 x 35 x 16 cm
(former approved size of cabin baggage: 55 x 40 x 20 cm.)
The bag must not contain:
- any liquids
- cosmetics or toiletries, including gels, pastes, lotions, liquid/solid mixtures,
perfumes and the contents of pressurised containers - these must be checked
in as hold baggage - cigarette lighters are not permitted in hold baggage or through the security
search. These may be purchased airside.
The bag can include:
- electronic equipment including mobile phones, digital cameras and MP3
players - laptops and large electronic equipment (e.g. large hair dryer) may be carried
in
cabin
baggage, but must be removed for x-ray controls - prescription medicines in liquid form if needed
during the flight, eg diabetic kit
- baby milk and liquid baby food (the contents of each bottle must be tasted
by
the accompanying passenger)
