CWT: Airline Fuel Surcharge Hikes Easily Outpacing Oil Price Increases

Airline fuel surcharges between April 2011 and May 2012 rose nearly twice as fast as oil prices, according to Carlson Wagonlit Travel. Analyzing its own data and figures from the International Civil Aviation Organization and the International Air Transport Association, CWT's Travel Management Institute determined that the price of oil rose 24 percent, yet surcharges on average jumped 53 percent.

Fuel surcharges rise twice as fast as oil prices

Airlines' fuel surcharges have risen more than twice as fast as the price of oil during the last two years, new research has shown. Since April 2011, the cost of oil - which generally mirrors the cost of aviation fuel - has risen by 24 per cent, while fuel surcharges have risen by 53 per cent on average, according to the study by Carlson Wagonlit Travel.
