Current local news affecting today's business traveler
What makes an event location “special”? According to the official definition, Special Event Locations (or SEL) are sites that are used for an event either permanently or temporarily, although they were originally constructed for another purpose. To name just a few examples, these might include airport hangars, train stations, castles, museums and industrial plants. Due to their great diversity, such locations are becoming increasingly popular with event planners who are always on the lookout for an unusual venue that is a far cry from the standard conference centers and function rooms.
Because of the great variety of places available, a suitable SEL can be found for any event, from very small gatherings of fewer than ten guests up to large events with several thousand participants. In addition, SELs offer event organizers the unique opportunity to give their guests access to places that are normally not open to the general public.
In spite of all the advantages that such an unusual location has to offer, they can also present a few challenges for the event organizers: often, SELs have significant deficits – and sometimes safety concerns – such as issues of compliance with the regulations on places of assembly. When choosing a suitable event location and going ahead with the planned event, it is therefore particularly important to ensure that it complies with the applicable safety regulations, or to have suitable alternative options available if necessary, in order to guarantee that the event experience is unusual but not unnerving.
