On October 4, the U.S. Congress revised its Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative; it extended the deadline to June 1, 2009, for requiring U.S. citizens to present a passport for re-entry when returning by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Bermuda or Panama. The deadline for air travelers remains January 8, 2007.
As previously reported in CWT Traveler, travelers have the option of purchasing a People Access Security Service (PASS) card as an alternative to a passport. At $50 USD, a PASS card is a cheaper option than a $97 USD passport for those who need to obtain the proper form of identification to comply with this rule.
