America West and US Airways announced an agreement to merge May 19, creating the nation’s largest low-cost full service airline with a broader domestic and international network than either of the respective carriers could operate alone. Upon approval and closing, the merged airline would operate under the US Airways name, but use America West’s discount pricing system rather than the more traditional pricing structure of US Airways. Once merged, the carrier would be headquartered in Tempe, Arizona—the home of America West—and operate under the leadership of Doug Parker, America West’s current chairman, CEO, and president. .
Last month the newest class of explosives detection canines graduated from a program that began 31 years ago. The National Explosives Detection Canine Team Program trains dogs and handlers to quickly locate and identify dangerous materials that may present a threat to transportation systems, including 64 of the nation's busiest airports. Equally important, the teams can quickly rule out the presence of dangerous materials in unattended packages, structures or vehicles, allowing the free and efficient flow of commerce.
