Beginning in early 2007, Air France will become the first carrier to test a new technology that accommodates in-flight mobile calls and text messages. As part of the new service, the “no smoking” signs above passenger seats – now considered obsolete since in-flight smoking has been universally banned, will be replaced by “no mobile” signs.
Instead of a picture of a cigarette, the new signs will display a mobile phone crossed out and will remain illuminated on flights until the plane reaches an altitude when mobile devices can be safely used without ground interference. Once that altitude is reached, the “no mobile” signs will be turned off and an announcement will be made informing passengers their mobile devices may be used.
