Now that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is allowing passengers to carry on a specified amount of liquids, gels and aerosols (see related story in Government/Legislation section), travelers are no longer automatically forced to check luggage they would prefer to carry onboard. Following are some reminders for keeping luggage small enough to easily and comfortably carry on rather than check:
Avoid packing items the hotel will provide in guest rooms – such as hair dryers or irons. A quick visit to the hotel’s Web site or a call to its front desk will provide the necessary information.
Minimize the amount of clothing needed by researching the destination’s weather and planning ahead for dressy dinners or casual outings on the trip agenda.
For trips of less than a week, Fodor’s Travel Wire suggests packing one shirt per day, one jacket or sweater, one bottom per every two days (but not less than two total pairs), no more than two pairs of shoes, underwear for each day and a conservative amount of extras, such as pajamas, bathing suits, jewelry and accessories.
For trips longer than a week, follow the plan above and plan ahead to wash some clothes to wear again before the trip is over.
Further consolidate by color-coordinating the packed clothing, which will provide more options on site and may allow for wearing a piece of clothing more than once during the trip.
Pack only travel-sized toiletries of products used on a daily basis. Rather than just a tip, this is now an actual requirement, given the TSA rules mentioned above.
Keep a list of necessary items as they come to mind and lay items out before packing. Then pack only what was laid out to resist the urge to sneak a few more items into the suitcase.
