December 2006
As previously reported in CWT Traveler, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security plans to implement part of its Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative in early 2007. The current deadline is January 23, 2007, by which citizens of the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document to gain entry into the U.S.
The Canadian government has announced it plans to pursue open skies agreements with more countries, which it claims will make plane tickets cheaper and will allow Canadian airlines to travel to new destinations. Currently, Canada has open skies agreements with the U.S. and Britain only. In contrast, the U.S. has 77 open skies agreements with other countries.
