Northwest Airlines recently announced it will permanently hire 200 baggage handlers to transport baggage, de-ice aircraft and perform other tasks at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. The airline attributes the hiring surge to attrition and “very modest” operational growth. These new hires coincide with the elimination of 646 airport ramp positions throughout the company.
Under a new contract reached with its ground workers’ union last summer, Northwest may use contractors to do ground handling work at stations with fewer than 50 flights each week. About 1,500 ground workers at the 69 smaller U.S. airports will lose their jobs as part of that outsourcing. Northwest has cut its yearly labor expenses by $1.4 billion since filing for bankruptcy in September of 2005.
