The International Air Transport Association (IATA) recently extended the deadline by which its member airlines must adopt paperless ticketing practices. The original deadline was December 31, 2007, but is now May 31, 2008. IATA has also adjusted its compliance goal from 100 percent e-ticketing to 96.5 percent, reflecting specific situations when e-ticketing is not practical or culturally acceptable.
U.S. airlines currently lead in e-ticketing adoption, with 93 percent of all tickets issued being electronic. North Asia comes in at 91 percent and Europe sits at 83 percent. Russia is lagging far behind, at only 16 percent paperless adoption.
