Aeroports de Montreal last month announced an increase in the airport improvement fee charged on all flights departing Montreal-Trudeau airport. The fee, currently $15 CAD, will increase to $20 CAD beginning January 4. The additional funds will go toward managing debt and making additional improvements to modernize and expand the facility.
The increase aligns Trudeau’s fee with other major Canadian airports—Toronto and Calgary. It is expected that 12.4 million passengers will travel through the airport in 2008, with that number increasing to 15 million by 2018.
Travelers may want to take note of whether airline improvement fees are included in the cost of their tickets. Vancouver Airport (YVR) is one airport where the fees are collected at the airport at the time of departure if the cost has not already been included in the ticket price.

Mineta San Jose International Airport plans to build a rental-car garage with 3,000 spaces featuring eight rental-car companies by the end of 2011. The garage will also include more than 300 spots for short-term parking.
The seven-story garage will cost $251 million USD, and construction is projected to start in early 2008. The garage is one part of a $1.7 billion USD modernization project to the airport. The project also includes renovating Terminal A, eliminating Terminal C, building Terminal B, and straightening the airport roads. In order to fund this project, the per-rental charge that customers pay will double on January 1 from $5 to $10 USD. This rate is on top of possible rate increases rental-car companies may start charging to leverage an increase in rent at the airport.
Travelers will be able to walk to the new garage as it will be located across the street from Terminal B, which is currently under construction. Travelers will no longer have to be shuttled to the rental-car locations.
