February 2008
As announced January 11, 2008, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has introduced a final rule establishing minimum security standards for state-issued drivers’ licenses and identification cards – called REAL ID.
Beginning February 1, U.S. passport applicants have the option of applying for a “passport card,”/ / a form of identification designed to help travelers comply with the U.S. government’s Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. The cards are intended for people who live near and cross over U.S. borders frequently and may be used for land and sea border crossings only.
CWT Traveler would like to give readers the opportunity to weigh in on topics of relevance
to travelers. Each month will highlight a single survey question, and the following month will
reveal the results. Readers also have the option to submit potential survey questions to be
highlighted in future issues of
CWT Traveler. February’s question is below, along with the link to submit your response.

The January survey question and results were as follows:
Is the United States’ “Registered Traveler Program” something you would consider enrolling in (at a cost of roughly $100 for an annual membership) in order to gain access to designated airport security fast lanes at participating airports?
43% responded “Yes, I would be interested in enrolling”
28% responded “No, I am not interested in the program”
11% responded “This program does not apply to me”
9% responded “I am already a member of the program”
9% responded “Other” and noted that their interest in the program would depend on such details as: which airports offered the service, or whether or not their company was willing to pay for their enrollment.
