US Airways has announced that it will begin charging a $25 second-checked-bag fee for most coach customers flying within the United States and to or from Canada, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe. Customers flying business or first class are exempt from the additional fee, as are Dividend Miles Preferred members or Star Alliance Silver and Gold status members. Additionally, active military personnel (in uniform with required ID), unaccompanied minors, and passengers checking assistive devices will not be charged the extra fee. The additional fee applies to tickets purchased on or after February 26, 2008, for travel on or after May 5, 2008.
Similar to United’s recently introduced policy, US Airways is stating that the fee is to offset rising fuel prices. Before packing, check luggage restrictions and policies regarding number of pieces and weight of each to avoid unwelcome surprises.
