The three-tier self-select security lane option
program that the TSA launched in February at the Salt Lake City and Denver airports has been
expanded to include international airports in Boston, Orlando, and Spokane. According to TSA three
more not-yet-announced airports will also have the program up and running by the end of April.
The program allows travelers to select a security lane based on experience and circumstance:
expert lanes for the experienced traveler who knows the rules—liquids, shoe removal, batteries,
etc.; casual traveler lanes for those who are familiar with requirements but don’t often travel;
and the slower lanes for families, special needs persons, and the infrequent traveler.
The TSA-produced blog, Evolution of Security, reports that throughput has increased up to 35
percent during busiest peak times in the expert lanes at the pilot airports.
