China security increases ahead of Olympic Games

Due to fear of protests and terrorist attacks, China has stepped up its security measures prior to the Olympic Games. Unrest in Tibet, substantially increased numbers of tourists and an increase in activism in the region have created a situation where safety and security are of paramount importance.

China’s Ministry of Public Security has posted specific details about the security measures. In writing and in everyday experience being reported, these measures include:
- Seizure of illegal guns and explosives
- Increased protection of oil and gas networks
- Special attention paid to public recreational places, hotels and leased housing
- Random ID check of foreigners
- Denials of visa issues and renewals
- Heightened inspection of migrant workers’ documentation
Recently, China’s intelligence has led to the capture of several groups planning attacks. Taking steps to encourage visitors to come to the country, while maintaining a handle on security, continues to be a challenge for China. In a country known for control, numerous variables are creating problems. With less than three months to go before the Olympics, China is addressing these issues as quickly as possible.
