Detroit airport replacing two terminals with one new
Detroit’s Metropolitan Wayne County Airport will open its new
North Terminal in a phased approach beginning this September, replacing and combining capacity from
its older Smith and Berry terminals. With the exception of Sky Team carriers, all airlines that
service the airport will use the North Terminal.
Once fully opened, the North Terminal will offer 26 gates and have
the capacity to expand to a total of 31 in the future. While about four million passengers are
expected to pass through the North Terminal in its first year of existence, it will be capable of
handling up to seven million passengers a year.
The new terminal will improve traveler convenience with more
ticketing stations, more efficient security checkpoints, and a centralized baggage system with
updated screening technology.

New O’Hare departure flight paths open
Two new air lanes recently opened for planes departing O’Hare
International Airport. This change is intended to prepare airspace for the new parallel runways
that are planned as part of the $15 billion expansion to take place over the next decade.
According to Federal Aviation Administration officials, increasing
the southbound departure lanes from three to five is not expected to provide major benefits
immediately in reducing delays, but is expected to help during some heavy traffic periods.
