AA testing onboard wireless Internet access from JFK to LAX
In late June, American Airlines
(AA) began offering passengers wireless Internet access on two of its flights—one flight from New
York’s JFK International to Los Angeles International (LAX), and one flight from LAX to JFK. Using
this service, passengers with laptops or handheld devices are able to surf the Internet, download
video and audio, and send/receive emails and other messages.
If broadly used by passengers on those routes, AA said it would expand the service to other
routes in the near future, including routes from JFK to San Francisco and Miami.
AA is partnering with technology company Aircell LLC to provide Internet connectivity for
between USD $9.95 and $12.95 per passenger. As the service becomes more widely implemented, the
higher fee will be charged for longer flights. Similar to fees for checked baggage and beverages
and snacks, AA has begun to view Internet capability as an additional revenue generator.
