Whether a traveler wants to lessen the pain at the pump or reduce a carbon footprint (or both), it is possible to find more hybrid and biofuel-powered rental cars these days.
Several car rental companies are renting hybrids that offer carbon offsets through TerraPass, a company that strives to reduce the negative effects on the climate caused by driving a car. Renters contribute USD $1.25 per rental, and TerraPass uses funds for an emissions-offset project. The project includes clean energy, such as wind farms; the creation of energy from farm animal waste; and capturing methane from landfills.
Some rental companies in California offer flexible-fuel vehicles, which run on E85 fuel, a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. However, E85 stations are scarce in California and may be difficult to find when needing to refuel.
A Los Angeles car rental company launched last fall rents only hybrids and emphasizes customer service. Its growing fleet includes Camry, Prius, and Highlander hybrids, the Escape, the Civic, the Lexus RX and the GMC Yukon.
Enterprise recently opened WeCar, a car-sharing service in St. Louis, and Hertz now offers hourly rental options in Boston and Manhattan.
While green rentals have environmental benefits, they often cost more than standard rental cars. So before selecting an eco-friendly car rental option, be sure to check the company travel policy for guidelines.

Manufacturers of regional aircraft have experienced increased sales in the last year; among them are Bombardier, Boeing, and ATR. High fuel costs have encouraged these aircraft manufactures to become more “green” by decreasing fuel emissions. Larger 70/90-seat jets have been constructed, increasing capacity. Manufacturers are also using lighter composite materials, allowing for significant fuel burn savings. Redesigned propellers have also optimized noise levels.
Other changes have occurred has well. Cabins have been designed with enlarged windows, increasing viewing area. LED lighting has been introduced, which uses less energy while creating a warmer glow, further adding to passenger comfort. Redesigned walls and ceilings create the look and feel of a larger space. Overhead bin space has also been enlarged to accommodate larger carry-on luggage.
