Three U.S. airports recently opened new
runways, all designed to increase capacity as well as reduce delays. Part of a USD $6.6 billion
modernization project, Chicago’s O’Hare airport opened its first new runway in 37 years. The new
runway, along with a new air-traffic control tower, was built to direct traffic on the so-called
bad-weather landing strip, which is intended to accommodate 70 more flights daily and help ease O’H
are’s notorious flight delays.
In addition to O’Hare’s new runway, Seattle-Tacoma opened its airport’s third runway, while
Dulles International Airport in Washington D.C. just opened its fourth.
