The high-speed train: the green way to travel for medium-distance
journeys
NS Hispeed would like you to be able to keep on travelling comfortably in the future. That is why we are committed to sustainable travel – travelling and considering the environment, people, nature and culture, all at the same time. We are making a contribution to a better environment by improving energy efficiency, reducing CO2 emissions yet further and thinking carefully about our energy sources.
Compared with the plane or car, the high-speed train is the greenest way to travel for medium-distance journeys. This has been shown in studies commissioned by NS Hispeed and carried out by Milieu Centraal. Milieu Centraal, a Dutch organisation offering environmental information tested by a forum of independent experts, has calculated the emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases for the eight most commonly booked NS Hispeed destinations (Antwerp, Brussels, London, Paris, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt and Berlin).
The calculations show that the amount of CO2 and other greenhouse gases emitted per passenger by train is about one seventh of that emitted by plane. The (high-speed) train also scores much better in comparison with a car containing two people. Choosing the train for your medium-distance journeys therefore lets you make an important contribution to the environment.
