British Airways campaign measures the mood of travellers
British Airways has launched a ‘Terminal 5 is working’ campaign using real time streaming
content on a dedicated website for the first time. With the tag line ‘What’s the word on T5?’ this
focuses on the mood of customers flying through the terminal.
Customers will be asked by roving researchers within the building to identify from a list of
seven options the word that best describe their experience. They are: happy, excited, calm,
impressed, frustrated, disappointed and angry. The researchers will feed that information directly
into a ‘hand held personal digital assistant’ (PDA) and the results will automatically update the
real time site.
The weather featured through the terminal’s ‘windows’ will change to reflect each chosen mood
as will the accompanying especially composed music. The mood research will be carried out in
Check-in, Departures and Arrivals and all three areas will be reflected on the site.
Katherine Whitton, head of global marketing communications, said: “This new phase moves on from
statistics and figures and focuses on how the terminal makes people feel. As a premium service
driven organisation, we understand that we need to deliver not only the rational benefits of flying
but also engage our customers emotionally. The T5 experience is certainly doing this and we want to
share this with a wider public. The voice and recommendation of our customers is the most powerful
tool to demonstrate that T5 is truly working and is designed to offer an upgraded experience at the
start and end of every journey.”
