Alitalia achieves positive results in first half 2009
Earnings of € 1,276 bln, 10 mln passengers and an average load factor of 59% have been substantially in line with the expectations. Such results have been achieved notwithstanding a 30% airline industry downturn in the first 5 months of 2009, with peaks of - 40% in the business travel segment. Alitalia improved its load factor from 51% of the first quarter to 65% in the second and projections of 72% in July.
Direct flights Venice – Catania and Venice – Brindisi
From the 10th of August Alitalia flies directly from Venice to Catania and vice versa.
From Venice there will be direct flights to Brindisi as well.
Fleet renewal programme Alitalia
Alitalia’s fleet renewal programme has started in March with the first delivery and another 9
new aircrafts are expected in 2009, with a simultaneous phasing out of the old MD80’s.
By 2013, Alitalia will operate 90 A320 on short/medium haul flights and 14 A330 on long haul
flights. The new aircrafts are equipped with state of the art technology in fuel efficiency.
The interiors are ergonomically designed to guarantee excellent comfort and all seats are
fitted with individual LCD monitors for personal entertainment.
Restyling
The Magnifica class at Alitalia on the intercontinental flights will be renewed with the most
advanced comfortable lie-flat seats. At the same time the Alitalia VIP lounges will be restyled as
well. Both projects will be completed halfway through 2010.

LAN will reinforce destination Santiago
LAN Airlines will operate an extra flight between Madrid and Santiago de Chili due to high
demand to traditional destinations as Patagonia, Atacama and Eastern Island. A flight will be added
to the daily operated routing to Santiago de Chili within 15 and 19th December 2009, the first two
weeks of January and the first week of February 2010.
The airline expects to cover all requested seats from Europe to the South American country
within this period.
New luxury Economy class for LAN airlines
After a big investment, LAN Airlines offers a totally renovated economy class cabin for all
intercontinental flights between Europe and South American Destinations. This is based on a new
ergonomic seat design, more space to lean, relax and enjoy the whole flight together with the new
modern audio and video system with individual screens and extended in-flight entertainment: 44
films, 95 serial channels, 14 games and 550 music CD.
Self-check-in for Economy Class passengers at Zürich Airport
The check-in facilities for SWISS Economy class passengers in ‘Check-In 1’ at Zürich Airport were replaced by self-check-in machines per 30 July 2009. The passengers can print out their boarding pass and any baggage tags themselves. SWISS staff will be present to help if needed. Once they have checked in, the traveller will proceed as usual to their departure gate (if they only have carry-on baggage), or will be directed to the bag drop-off point in case of registered baggage to hand in.
Travellers needing special assistance (e.g. wheelchair, unaccompanied minor) can contact the Special Assistance Desk in the departure hall.
SWISS Business Upgrade
On selected flights within Europe, SWISS offers customers the possibility to fly Business
