Baby boomers vs. millennials – How they travel and what that means for your travel program

The fact that different groups of travelers have different habits and preferences is nothing new. CWT has taken a closer look at the generation gap and drawn some useful conclusions. This allows travel managers to align their company’s travel program even more precisely to the individual demands of different target groups, promoting compliance and improving process and cost efficiency.

Christian is a millennial (millennials are the generation born between 1980 and 1995). He travels regularly, is cost-conscious, is more concerned about his safety than older travelers and likes to keep in contact with his family. This is the outcome of a study carried out by the CWT Solutions Group in a nutshell.

In greater detail, the study reveals that compared with older generations such as baby boomers (people born between 1946 and 1965) or generation X (1966–1979), the average millennial (born after 1980) spends around half a day longer traveling than the average business traveler. They are thriftier, more Internet- savvy and adhere to the travel policy more than older colleagues. At the same time, they are much more safety-conscious and keep in touch more with their family on the road by phone, Skype or e-mail.

Millennials will be in the majority

As millennials will constitute the largest group of business travelers after 2024, companies should take them into account to a greater extent in their travel management. This will not only make for more satisfied travelers, but also benefit the company’s travel program at the same time. An examination of different generations has shown that it is always helpful to collect and assess a wide range of data. This is particularly useful when it comes to identifying travelers’ individual requirements, as it means that specific conclusions can be drawn that can benefit the travel program beyond purely quantitative aspects.
