Loooooong distance! How to survive long-haul flights
Long-distance travelers often have to sit for 10, 12 or more hours at a time in an airplane – a tiring and stressful experience. We give you some tips on how to survive a long haul flight:
Over the clouds
The air in the cabin is dry, so make sure you drink a lot. You should buy at least two bottles of water after passing through security. Lip balm, skin cream and wet wipes can also help.
Let me entertain you
Most airlines offer an entertainment program on long-haul flights. Still, it is advisable to download films and books onto your laptop and have your favorite music on your smartphone. Headphones with noise suppression are also a useful accessory. If you want to sleep on the plane, you should take earplugs, a sleep mask and neck pillow with you. Chewing gum after a snooze will freshen you up!
Jetlag is a major problem on long-distance flights. If you are flying westwards, try not to sleep during the flight to avoid making the problem worse. When you arrive at your destination, don’t give in to fatigue but try to stay awake until the sun goes down. It is a good idea to be where it there is light for as long as possible. Light inhibits the production of melatonin that makes your body tired and prepares it for sleep. Also, plan important meetings at your destination in the morning, when you are widest awake.
If you are flying east, you should sleep on the plane if possible to avoid jetlag. Food that is rich in carbohydrates like fruit, pasta, potatoes or yoghurt will stimulate your need to sleep. Practicing autogenic training will also help you to fall asleep. Try to avoid thinking too much about getting to sleep or your meetings the next day. Imagine an object in all its detail, such as an apple – that will make you tired. On long-distance eastward flights, you should plan your important meetings at your destination in the evening, because you will be more awake than in the morning.
