More for less – that’s Scandi!

The Nordic countries are truly “hosts with the most” when welcoming corporate guests - but they may not be as pricey as you think.

Natural beauty

Scandinavia’s peaceful reputation, excellent facilities and incredible natural landscapes strengthen its appeal to the MICE market.

“Incentives are playing a more prominent part in companies’ overall meeting and events spend, and the range of outdoor activities on offer in Scandinavia makes it a very good option,” says Simon Hubbard, account manager for CWT Meetings & Events.

Bucking the trend

While the Nordic region has traditionally been considered an expensive place to do business, Carlson Wagonlit Travel’s (CWT) 2014 Global Travel Price Outlook report revealed that of the countries surveyed, Norway and Sweden were the only two where air travel was set to become cheaper in 2015.

Flights originating in Norway and Sweden are set to decrease in price by 0.3 per cent and 0.4 per cent respectively.

The report also found that room rates in Norway and Sweden are both due to increase at a 0.5 per cent this year, far below the global average of 3.6 per cent.

Opposites attract

The dynamic capitals of Oslo and Stockholm boast innovative infrastructure as well as supreme natural beauty on their doorstep, which can set the scene either for festive winter incentives or stunning summer events.

Norway offers active incentives such as “Nordic walking” (with ski poles) through woodland, an afternoon of skiing, or abseiling.

Bergen, the gateway city to the Norwegian Fjords is a scenic seven-hour train ride from Oslo, and vintage boats for gala dinners can be hired here.

For a truly memorable experience, consider an excursion to Trondheim in the north of Norway to see the Aurora Borealis illuminate the night sky.

Stockholm’s archipelago offers ample incentive opportunities, such as speedboat safaris, steamboat rides, “glamping” (glamorous camping) excursions to a private island and ice skating in the winter.

A particularly popular excursion is a trip to the world’s original Icehotel in Jukkasjarvi – a 90-minute flight from Stockholm - which celebrates its 25th anniversary this season.
